Benchmark case: VENTO AEC vs FDS

Updated: Mar 13

In this specific case, our aim is to compare the performances of  VENTO AEC and FDS  (Fire Dynamics Simulator), demonstrating the seamless alignment between the two softwares.

The benchmark case is built upon the FDS parametres described in Annex D of the guide “Design methodologies of smoke and heat exhaust ventilation” (Morgan et al. 1999).

The case involves a fire scenario within a shop located in a simplified multi-storey shopping mall.

The fire originates in  the shop and the resulting smoke spreads across the mall’s ceiling. The fire’s heat is generated by a 3m x 3m fire with a power of 7.7 MW. About 35% of the energy is radiative, and the remaining 65% is convective.

The results show the smoke distribution and the velocity vectors over the vertical symmetry plane, with VENTO’s output (Figure 1) being seamlessly aligned to the result from FDS (Figure 2).
